In Short
The Theatre Royal Drury Lane says 'ello to 'enry 'iggins.

In Full
LERNER AND LOEWE's lyrical masterpiece receives a full on revival from the energetic king of choreography, Matthew Bourne. With his help director Trevor Nunn's dab hand for feelgood musicals ad libs on Shaw's original unhappy ending.

In this tale of bachelor linguistics professor Henry Higgins' bet to turn a cockney flower girl into a social butterfly, everyone comes up smelling of roses. The batchelor's wager transforms both their lives and offers stars Joanna Riding the opportunity to shine.

This production genuinely combines the appeal of film with a real feel for thrill of live performance . A particularly inspired moment kicks off with a mock bull fight between Eliza and Higgins in honour of her new found enunciation, and the exuberance of controlled chaos is ever evident whether the cast are kicking each other or dancing in time.

For all the scene-setting shinnanigans of continually changing locations, there's no denying this social fairy tales' place alongside other smash hits. Eliza shouting uncouthly at the races is a forerunner to Pretty Woman, and there's more than a touch of the Oscar Wilde about these jokes at the expense of high society. This show may be an adaptation of a Motion Picture, but Shaw's notion that class is determined by how we speak is as resonant today as a cockney accent.
