Full Review
If you think it feels
like an Indian Summer outdoors, try watching the people on stage.
The cast of Bombay Dreams, that is.
After months of previews, the first play to put Bollywood on stage
is getting an audience. Fine lead performances from the likes of
Preeya 'Bend it like Beckham' Kalidas and pacy little numbers like
Shekalaka Baby look set for a hit.
As an East-meets-West hybrid, what this show lacks in wet saries
it makes up for in naughty jokes. Good old Lloyd Webber has finally
taken a back seat and the brains behind Cats and Jesus Christ Superstar
has left the music writing to Akesh Kapur this time (although he
did conceive the idea for the script along with filmeister Shekhar
Kapur).
The story of Bombay Dreams is one
of universal themes. Dreams and ambitions, the desire to accomplish
and the importance of culture and roots all pay dividends in this
accessible romance. For at this musical's heart lies a love story set against
the backdrop of the colourful and magical Indian movie industry.
Like all the best musicals, Bombay Dreams is a celebration of the best of humanity.
