SET IN the middle of a Singaporean restaurant, you wouldn't imagine
the Bavarian Beerfests to hold the same kind of Oktoberfest atmosphere,
but sliding into the usually asian restaurant, it is obvious that
Oktoberfest is everywhere.
Tables are sheathed in blue and white checked tableclothes; they
are long and stuffed with groups of people from all places. While
many are German, there are lots who are just along for the ride.
And a ride it is: a lengthy party (five till midnight) means that,
around eight thirty, most inhabitions have been thrown aside with
the bottomless beer, pretzels and sausages. People stand up for
German drinking songs, and dance, tabletop, to shameless Euro-pop,
and the energy is catchy - even the British are dancing.
Meeting fresh faces is easy, as tables swap and change occupants,
and by the end, most are mingling with new friends -- perhaps jigging
on the benches.
Bavarian Beerfests are not, necessarily, an inexpensive night out,
but UKP29 per person gets you unlimited food and beer, and if you
crave proper German sausages and huge glasses of lager, you couldn't
pick a better party.
