Trains

Now run by Railtrack and a host of privatised operators the old overground or "British Rail" service stretches across the capital. In South London overground is about all you get, bar the tail ends of several North London tube lines (Northern, District, East London, Bakerloo, Victoria). Fast and efficient from key stations.

Tubes

Struggling to keep up with the 20th Century, let alone entering the 21st Century, the first major metropolitan railway in the world shows its age and is expensive to use. Try it once for the experience, then use the following to see the city much better from the surface.

Buses

The traditional double decker buses still motor around central London. Get a map and bus pass (e.g. from a tube station) and hop on board.

Nightbuses operate to and from Trafalgar Square.

Taxis

If you have the money go by traditional London Taxicab (also called Black Cab or Hackney Carriage). There is no better way.

Tourists should avoid unlicensed mini-cabs, particularly at night and around Victoria Station. Further out of the centre black cabs are harder to find so ask a local to recommend a taxi firm to you.
