Community Improvement

Organisers and government officials hope the Olympics will transform the economically depressed London borough of Newham, which features Stratford and the Lower Lea River Valley.

The Newham Council has offered their unequivocal support for the bid particularly citing the proposed 9,000 new homes in Olympic Park with revamped healthcare and educational facilities, and the building of the Olympic Park itself. The borough council also hopes that the Olympic games will provide “role models for our young people in what is the youngest community in Britain” and “radically improve the image of East London and its residents."

The bid committee believes that the Olympics will create 12,000 new jobs, with the possibility of many of them going to East Londoners. Not everyone is for the bid, as IOC estimates placed support for it as low as 67%, but the London bid figures placed it at 82%.

Sporting Facilities

Part of the lasting sporting legacy in East London will be the five permanent Olympic venues that will remain in Olympic Park after the games. The remaining facilities would be used for international sports, but more importantly, it is proposed that the local community would benefit from the athletic legacy as well. The London Olympic Institute will offer world-class facilities to the local community for training and sport. Additionally, two of the other venues will be designed to be reassembled in other parts of the UK after the games are over.
