Olympic Park
The most important
venue of the 2012 is still an architect’s dream. The 500 acre Olympic Park proposed
for the Lower Lea Valley in East London would contain no fewer than 9 competition venues
and as is billed as by the bid’s official website as “the biggest urban park
created in Europe for more than 150 years.”
Outside of the new Olympic Park, which will principally host
indoor sports and track and athletic events, all of London and to a lesser degree all
of the UK will join in as hosts. The crown jewel of other UK venues will be football,
with matches planned on pitches across the UK including Manchester United’s legendary
Old Trafford, Scotland’s Hampden Park, and Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium among them.
Northern Ireland’s Windsor Park has even been proposed. The final would take place at the
new, revamped and expanded Wembley Stadium. Other events proposed to take place outside London
include rowing at Dorney Lake, Eton College.
Within London, planners have been just as innovative with
venue choices. Organisers plan to make maximum use of already existing large green
spaces in London like Hyde Park and Greenwich Park. The most world-class and world-famous
current accommodation would no doubt be Wimbledon, offering people around the world yet
another opportunity to see the sport at its most legendary venue. Some of the more
innovative proposals include beach volleyball at the Horse Guard Parade and baseball
and softball at Regent’s Park.
