The Versace Exhibition

The V & A has opened its doors to one of the biggest names in fashion this month. Designer to an endless stream of supermodels and celebrities, the late Gianni Versace's offerings are now on show to the public until January of next year.

Extravagant as Versace's style is, the celebrity factor certainly adds to the glamour. Dresses worn by Diana, Courtney Love, Madonna and Jennifer Lopez fill up the exhibition as well as designs inspired by the likes of Lichenstein and Andy Warhol.

The first creation that greets you as you walk in is "that dress" complete with its famous gold safety pins, albeit minus Liz Hurley. The layout curves round to reveal a parade of ball gowns and evening dresses in sumptuous designs of tulle, chiffon & silk positively brimming with diamonds and heavy embroidery.

Next, you're transported through to the eighties and early nineties, where tulle & chiffon gives way to leather and lycra. Bolero jackets and bouffant skirts reign supreme on this second catwalk along with studded waistcoats and the dangerously short mini-dress.

The last section of the exhibition shows off some of Versace's more extreme designs mostly created with the stage in mind. If by this point the temptation to reach out and touch is too much, the organizers have kindly left some designs until last that you can stroke, pat and paw.

If you're still hungry for more, the souvenir shop boasts the usual array of t-shirts, diaries, pens and posters. They even have an endless supply of gold safety pins on sale, so you can try and convince anyone who'll listen that you modified Elizabeth Hurley's dress while no one was looking.

Standing in stark contrast to its neighbouring exhibition of the Japanese Samurai, the Versace collection won't offer you centuries of discovery, but for glitz and glamour just walk right in.
