Mackenzie Phillips has an awkward relationship with God but still attends church with his wife Nan and cherubic children, Kate, Josh and Missy. A summer expedition to Wallowa State Lake Park culminates in tragedy and Mac is consumed by guilt. He refuses to articulate his pain, shutting out Nan as well as the children. At his lowest ebb, Mac receives a typewritten letter, supposedly from God, which invites him to return to the scene of his greatest pain and heal his wounds.
