Bartlett Sher directs a new staging of Verdi’s passionate opera, based on Shakespeare’s tragedy, broadcast live from the stage of the Lincoln Center For The Performing Arts in New York. Venetian general Otello returns home to Cyprus, having defeated the Turks, to his beautiful young wife Desdemona. His supposedly loyal ensign and confidant, Iago, is enraged that Otello has overlooked him for promotion, favouring the young Cassio instead. Determined to have his revenge, Iago hatches a plan to poison Otello’s marriage.
