Jewish singer Suzie becomes a cause celebre with a Parisian opera company. Desperate to raise enough money to travel to America and locate her errant father, Suzie teams up with Russian showgirl Lola to seduce the audiences, but is constantly distracted from her goal by swaggering horseman Cesar. Desire and ambition run rife as the Germans invade, posing difficult moral choices for Suzie and her friends.
