Augusta and her sister Louise have managed to avoid the bloodshed of the American Civil War, living in isolation on a farm with their slave Mad. They are completely self-sufficient, in order to avoid attracting the attention of passing soldiers, until a medical emergency forces Augusta to head into town in search of supplies. The sortie is a success but Augusta falls foul of two villainous Union soldiers, Moses and Henry, who follow her back to the homestead with a mind to rape and pillage.
