In San Jose, mining is a lucrative business but conditions below ground are hellish. Early into a shift, the Copiapo mine collapses, trapping shift foreman Luis Urzua and 32 other men below ground. The miners seek refuge in a rescue chamber with limited food rations and perfunctory medical supplies. The beleaguered Minister of Mining, Laurence Golborne, brings in engineer Andre Sougarret and American driller Jeff Hart to mastermind a daring rescue.
