Director Margherita is struggling to shoot a demanding film about a workers’ strike while contending with the impending death of her scholarly mother, Ada. Consequently, she is permanently distracted and ill prepared to deal with egotistical Italian-American lead actor Barry Huggins, who hasn’t learnt the script in an unfamiliar tongue. Friction on the set contrasts with the relative calm of Margherita’s final days with her mother.
