Acclaimed 1969 version of Shakespeare’s tragedy using a translation of the Bard’s verse by Boris Pasternak, set to a haunting orchestral score by Shostakovich. Aging monarch King Lear elects to retire from the throne and to divide up his vast kingdom between his three daughters. He decrees that the girls should take husbands in order to inherit their land. Eldest daughters Goneril and Regan duly oblige, marrying the Duke of Albany and the Duke of Cornwall to get their greedy mitts on their inheritance. However, youngest child Cordelia refuses to bend to her father’s will.
