Junpei Seno and his brother Kanta live on the island of Shikotan with their parents. The Second World War is over and Russian troops swarm over the island, arresting most of the men. The boys strike up an unlikely friendship with Tanya, whose father is the commander of the invading forces. Despite spiralling tensions on the island, Junpei, Kanta and Tanya grow close but the youngsters are blissfully ignorant to the dangers that lie ahead.
