Free spirit Gabrielle is threatened with an extended stay at a mental hospital unless she agrees to marry dull farm worker Jose. She reluctantly agrees and prepares for a loveless marriage until a medical diagnosis propels her temporarily on a different path. Gabrielle is sent to Switzerland to recuperate where she meets a handsome wounded lieutenant called Andre, who sets her heart ablaze.
