Bathsheba Everdene inherits her uncle’s estate and defies expectation to earn the respect of the men in her employment. Young shepherd Gabriel Oak, who has fallen on hard times, finds work on the estate and struggles to contain his feelings for Bathsheba, which can never be realised given the difference in their social standing. Meanwhile, emotionally repressed and wealthy farmer William Boldwood sets out to woo Bathsheba and take her as his bride, but her head is turned by dashing Sergeant Troy.
