Fourteen-year-old schoolgirl Hirut is making her way home when a gang of men on horseback attempts to kidnap her. The teenager dares to fight back, grabs the rifle of one of her would-be abductors and shoots the man who was destined to be her husband. Crusading lawyer Meaza Ashenafi agrees to represent brave Hirut and argues that the girl acted in self-defence. The case shines an uncomfortable spotlight on traditions in the fiercely patriarchal African nation.
