Rodeo bull rider Ron Woodroof is a ladies man, who enjoys casual sex with many female partners in 1985 Dallas. Following a work related injury, Ron is treated at hospital and the doctor informs Ron that he is HIV positive and will probably die within 30 days. As he researches HIV, Ron learns about clinical trials of AZT and he ventures to Mexico to source the non FDA-approved drug in order to set up a club to help other patients, including a transvestite called Rayon.
