Born and raised in Brooklyn by a Haitian father and Puerto Rican mother, Jean-Michel Basquiat gate-crashed New York's flourishing art scene in the early 1980s, drawing inspiration from his surroundings for distinctive drawings and paintings. This documentary explores the period in the late 1970s shortly before this big breakthrough, when the teenage Basquiat was finding his voice in Reagan-era New York City before the spectre of Aids cast a long shadow over the city and its denizens.
