Jo is a sensitive young girl, who is abandoned by her uncaring, alcoholic mother, and then discovers she is pregnant by a one-night stand. She finds work in a shoe shop and strikes up a friendship with gay shop assistant Geoffrey, who soon becomes her roommate. Jo and Geoffrey plan to raise the family together, despite the obvious difficulties and the prejudice of neighbours and friends.
