Mathieu Vasseur is a janitor at a college and dreams of literary success. He has penned his first novel but publishers have dismissed it out of hand without a word of explanation. By chance, Pierre stumbles upon the diary of a dead French soldier, who fought in Algeria, and decides to pass off the document as his own work of fiction. He retypes the entire diary and submits it to publishers under his own name. They clamour to sign him and three years later, Mathieu is a literary sensation.
