London Fashion Week - Day 4: Tuesday, 14 February 2007

On a day when romance was supposed to be on everyone's minds, some animal rights activists just didn't feel the love for Julien MacDonald, whose new autumn/winter collection centered around the use of fur.

Naomi Campbell opened and closed his Tuesday night runway show, which left critics protesting his choice of material. Today, he had an answer for his anti-fur dissenters: "P*ss off." That's all he had to say for the anti-fur crowd, and apparently he isn't one to mince words. His remarks are mildly ironic since his show was the only one for Fashion Week which had a secret location--the Park Lane Hilton--to avoid protesters. Celebs like Peaches and Pixie Geldof and Kimberley Stewart were present for MacDonald's controversial showing, although they and the other guests had to endure an hour and a half delay for the event.

On to Wednesday's news, Roksanda Ilincic started the day with a sweet and charming show at Quaglino's, complete with a bellini, chocolate and salmon croissant breakfast. The romance continued with pink, frills and crystal on the runway. How appropriate for the holiday at hand.

At Jasper Conran, models walked through the Royal Academy of Arts venue wearing double breasted trenches, simple collared shirt and skirt combinations or tiered black dresses. At times, Conran's experimentation with volume was reminiscent of Nicolas Ghesquière's work for Balenciaga from a few seasons ago, with tons of fabric and frills on the top or bottom of an outfit to change up its silhouette. Conran's choices were interesting, although not always visually successful.

Gareth Pugh's celebrity-filled showing will be tomorrow evening, and rumour has it Kelly Osbourne and Peaches Geldof are on the guest list. Then Giles Deacon will close the night, and as he was dubbed Designer of the Year at the 2006 British Fashion Awards for his Giles line, he should have plenty of good things to offer.
