The former EastEnders actress – who shot to fame in the 80s as Kathy Beale in the Walford soap – is “really looking forward” to taking on the role of Sandy Roscoe, the mother of five hunky brothers.

She said: “I am really looking forward to joining Hollyoaks which is going from strength to strength under Bryan Kirkwood at the moment.

“My real family are excited to move up to Liverpool – a fantastic city – and I’m eager to meet my new family, five hunky Hollyoaks sons who I’m sure will all be saints!”

As well as Taylforth’s introduction, Gemma Bissix – who played Clare Devine in Hollyoaks between 2006 and 2007 and briefly returned in 2009 – will be reprising her role as the soap’s superbitch at the end of March.

She said: “I’m really looking forward to re-joining the cast of Hollyoaks. Clare Devine is one of my favourite characters and I can’t wait to get back into the role.
