The 85-year-old actress, who plays fan favourite Dot Branning on the BBC One soap, has confessed she may not return to the show after her six-month break.

Brown told The Sun: “My contract ended and I want to do something else. As an actress you don’t want to always plod along at the same thing. I don’t know how long I will be out.

“In fact I have no idea if I will go back – no one is indispensable.”

Brown is an Albert Square veteran, playing chain-smoking Dot from 1985 to 1993 and then from 1997 onwards.

The actress announced in April she was planning to take a short sabbatical from the show in order to write her autobiography.

The star’s agent had explained: “June has taken some time away from EastEnders to focus on her autobiography but she will be returning to the programme.”

Dot will be written out of the show this week with a storyline that sees her struggling laundrette close; her last scenes will show her departing the Square to visit relatives.

An EastEnders spokesperson said recently: “June is on a break but will be back.”
