Asked if being a prince lives up to the fairytale, the 27-year-old bachelor said: “No, not at all. As any girl would ever tell you. It’s sort of, ‘Oh my God, he’s a prince’. But no.

“The job that it entails – I mean look at me, I’m 27 years old, and not so much searching for someone to fulfil the role, but obviously, you know, finding someone that would be willing to take it on.”

On the subject of his famous grandmother Queen Elizabeth, he joked he is planning to take her “out on the town” to celebrate her 60th year on the throne.

Speaking to CBS News of the completion of a 10-day tour of the Caribbean and Brazil as part of the queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations, he said: “As a group of grandchildren, we will hopefully be able to have a dinner and something and do something fun with her, maybe take her out on the town.

“She’s a fantastic woman. Not only as a grandmother, but as a queen as everybody knows.

“I never expected the reception that we’ve been given in all these countries. It did choke me up a little bit every now and then because to me, she’s just granny.

“But, to all these countries, she’s the queen. She’s this great thing that they respect and love. So it’s been an emotional tour but great fun.”
