Every now and then a great playwright writes something autobiographical yet
timeless. Or in the case of the Master Builder, Ibsen scripted a soul-
searching tale that the modern minded John Logan has had fun translating.

The result boasts a surprise factor that few classics have preserved.
Halvard Solness, otherwise known as the drama’s namesake, is at once a
strange protagonist and a distorted version of Ibsen himself at the time of
writing. Falling for a younger woman then toppling off a building in a
crazed act of lust and guilt, the Master Builder’s obscure form of emotional
breakdown strikes a curiously contemporary chord.

All the spookier, then, that the latter years of Ibsen’s own marriage
suffered the strain of his unconsummated passion for various girls. Patrick
Stewart’s moving performance marks a strong departure from his better known
incarnation in Star Trek, and he is well supported by ex-Royle family
actress Sue Johnson in the role of the wronged wife - but it is Logan’s
script and keen eye for masculinity in crisis that makes this century old
play so relevant today.
