One Big Secret Garden
Some say drama is all about creating suspense. You don't want to let the audience know what's coming up next, or when it's coming, and that's how it is when you go to Kew Gardens.
On the walk from the station, high walls prevent anything more than a tree-top clue to the goodies inside, while from the riverside carpark visitors enter the giant secret garden by the kind of small, hedgebound gate you find in a local park.
Inside, the botanical strip-tease continues. Paths curve sneakily around tree-lined corners to reveal startlingly new vistas; giant greenhouses framed with cold, industrial iron hothouse mini-jungles and in the distance, Kew's pagoda adds an air of fairytale magic. There are yet-to-be revealed secrets everywhere.
In the book The Secret Garden, children grow emotionally when in commune with plant-life and you get a bit of that effect at Kew, too. It's that old nature helping you feel more human thing. People look taller as they walk with their heads held high and I swear some of us leave measurably taller as well, the result of having repeatedly to telescope our necks to spot the next miracle.
