Gold Medal for Pessimism

About the only way Britain could move further up the Olympic gold medal table is if there were gongs handed out for moaning.

I like a good moan as much as the next true-born Brit, especially a moan about moaning obviously, but you would have thought this was one fortnight in which the whingers would have stopped their mouths.

Instead, curled-lip comments involving tax-payers cash greet Britain's record medal mountain, and the mouth-watering prospect of the next Games coming to this city is anticipated the way residents of Tiblisi look forward to a visit of Russian tanks.

In all likelihood the theme tune at the 2012 opening ceremony will be London Bridge is Falling Down, the Olympic flame will start a second Great Fire of London and Gordon Brown will still be Prime Minister.
