Diary

The unbeatable loveliness of queuing

Although I'm an impatient fellow, I would like to declare my appreciation for the good old fashioned queue. It might be a little late in the day though as I fear this humanising and efficient social code is withering away.

Take the bus stop. Our cultural mores have long insisted that embarkation is carried out strictly on a first come, first served basis. In recent years the friendly thin line has morphed into a rugby scrum, particularly if you're brave enough to travel when the kids are on their way to or from school.

A good queue is all about reasonableness and fairness and a collective leap out of the jungle for a bunch of strangers who have never met and in all probability will never meet again. Without the queue the strongest and rudest get to the front first in a mad scramble that makes me turn away and head for an alternative activity, preferably involving a linear gathering of pleasant and polite folk.

Smart companies have cottoned on to the impending implosion of the queue and are making a nice little earner out of our collective impatience and rudeness.

EasyJet now offers travellers the option to pay a few quid more to indulge in an orgy of queue jumping called 'Speedy Boarding' - that's speedy boarding for some and groans and ire from all the other passengers of course. Ever the hypocrite, I must admit I choose this option every time, as at 6'5", the increased chance to get to the delights of limitless legroom on the front row is too good to miss.

Although this worked in the scheme's early days, on a recent flight it seemed half the passengers were Speedy Boarders, leading to a Neanderthal scramble aboard by a few dozen otherwise sane folk. And yes, I did get a front row seat.

It just goes to show how important and fair the simple queue is. You might not get there first, but you do get to have a good chat about the weather with some old chap on his way to collect his pension at the post office. Post office? Now there's a place that knows how to lay on a queue.

It has that magical combination of Tchaikovsky's music, a compelling story of tragic romance and choreography that allows the very best dancers to show just how amazing they can be. This new Royal Ballet Season opens with a revival of Anthony Dowell's romantic productionwhose designs were inspired by Imperial Russia of 1895, when the ballet was first performed...
