Beyond Batman

Despite Christian Bale's attempts to grab press coverage by having a bundle with his mum, everyone knows that the real star of The Dark Knight is Heath Ledger's Joker.

Nearly twenty years back, Jack Nicholson played a similar gag on Michael Keaton and both Batman films show that it's the baddies we are drawn towards, mainly because you can't help wanting them to realise their grand ambitions.

I expect Old Ma Bale taunted her son in the way all mums do. Yes, very good Christian, dear, I see you can carry off a quick costume change, but that Mrs Ledger's son from down the road had plans to change the whole world! And he never forgot her birthday.

The big political message from all this is clear: Tory leader David Cameron has blundered by going for the nice-guy, Bruce Wayne, schtick and the way is open for the already gloomy-looking Gordon Brown to embrace his dark side.

Going for total world domination might be a bit risky, but he could make a solid enough start by employing goons to cut the brake cables of Cameron's bike and then emerge from behind a hedge after the inevitable crash, laughing like a loony. Turn the gloom into mania and we'd be his. As The Joker says in the new film, "This town deserves a better class of criminal... and I'm gonna give it to them."

Romeo and Juliet
Open Air Theatre
Until 2 August 2008

Romeo and Juliet - Open Air TheatreIf the bard himself were still alive today (and if he had actually used women in his casts), then he would be happy to place Nicholas Shaw and Laura Donnelly in his title roles. The two have a palpable chemistry that sparks in each one of Romeo's love-drunk grins (nice smile, you) and Juliet's angsty sighs. The pair put on such a convincing show of swooning for each other, in fact, that it would be hard to believe they're not swooning in real life...
