Theatre's Future on the Streets of London

All the signs are we're heading into a recession. All the signs except for one and that's West End theatre, which posted it's best ever year for ticket sales in 2007 and looks set to break the record again this year.

Musicals make up most of those tickets and we've had some great ones recently, with Wicked, Jersey Boys and Grease all worth a mention. What that trio have in common is that they're all set in America, unless you really believe in the wonderful world of Oz.

That might be about to change. One interesting trend to keep an eye on is the emergence of London as the setting for upcoming musicals. First and foremost, there's the revival of Oliver!, which returns to the West End early next year. At the cinema, we've already had Sweeney Todd and last week a new version of Sherlock Holmes starring Sacha Baron Cohen was announced. Best of all, some intrepid souls are launching a musical based on the life and times of David and Victoria Beckham.

That turn to real-life, well as real as it is in Poshnbecksland, could turn out to be a watershed. By 2011, there'll be extravaganzas about declining house prices starring the ex-presenters of by-then cancelled TV property programmes and shows with doom-laden songs covering hard drug abuse and street crime. (Why does every article these days always come back to Blake and Amy? - Ed.)
