Naomi Campbell Needs a New Mandela

"I'm looking forward to seeing my grandfather, absolutely," enthused Naomi Campbell just hours before learning adopted 'granddad' Nelson Mandela had rubbed her name off the celeb list for his 90th birthday gig at Hyde Park on Friday.

Apparently Gramps got the grumps about the supermodel wearing a hat bearing the number 46664, his prison number, at the time of her recent arrest for airport-rage.

You can see the great man's point. Not only might her police-bashing antics have brought his 46664 AIDS charity into disrepute, but it also cheapens Mandela's own struggle with security forces over issues a bit bigger than being able to exert first class airside privileges to the max.

Still, he must have known Naomi was a bit of a loose cannon from the beginning and bawling out your grandkids goes against all the rules. It's meant to be the parents who do the telling off while grandparents drop you a conspiratorial wink, offer a consoling cuddle and give you some cash to buy an ice-cream.

Mandela's behaviour amounts to a resignation letter from the granddad job. Luckily for Naomi, I know just the man to step in as a sympathetic uncle figure. Winks, cuddles and ice-creams will be just be the start and you can wear any baseball cap you like.
