Oscar-winning director Ang Lee's flawed 2003 film adaptation of the not-so-jolly green giant struggled to marry a ponderous screenplay with overblown action set pieces, and a central character who looked more like Shrek's dishevelled cousin than an unbridled force of rage...

Big Phil for London Mayor

BIG PHIL SCOLARI is a blunt speaker, a take-no-prisoners kind of guy who tells it like he sees it. The new Chelsea manager once broke sacred football-omerta and freely admitted he instructs his players to foul opponents. "Everyone does it, but I'm the only one who can say it," he boasted.

When his appointment was announced on Wednesday, you could hear squeals of delight from sports desks all over London. Juicy quotes will flow unhindered, stories will write themselves, press conferences will be as full of gold as Roman Abramovitch's bathroom taps.

There is only one snag in the happy-days theory and it goes by the name of Boris Johnson. Our new London Mayor was similarly lauded as a straight-talker, but has failed in his brief to lighten the capital's mood by forgetting to put his foot in his mouth at every opportunity. He's been got at by the suits and now the suits are after Scolari.

Chelsea have one of the biggest marketing and PR departments of any football club in the world and it's hard to imagine they won't stick a mouth-minder at Scolari's side, encouraging him to use his lack of English as a protective screen, batting back any questions hoping to tease out a headline-friendly blooper.

It's even possible Boris himself will be wheeled in to help Scolari manage the media. All the signs are there they'd get on. Besides the shoot from the hip approach, they are both Big in an endearingly clumsy kind of way, they share a love for right-wing Chilean dictator General Pinochet and best of all, their approach to football is identical, as this famous clip of Johnson taking out a German opponent proves. That's one way to deal with annoying tabloid reporters, anyway.
