Loony Tunes and Mayoral Melodies

Where have all the loonies gone? Jokes about eccentric Tory Boris Johnson aside, they were one of the things that made voting fun, but on the list of Mayoral candidates on the ballot sheet this morning, only disappointment met the gaze of this loony hunter.

The closest to a loony candidate in the Mayoral election is probably independent Winston McKenzie, but he lets the side down by being pretty normal, a citizen with a higher whackiness rating than the average perhaps, but still one with run-of-the-mill beefs about life in London.

They would have torn up Winston's application form at the offices of the Monster Raving Loony Party, if they'd had application forms and offices. Undisputed kings of the insane vote when led by top-hatted 60s pop star Screaming Lord Sutch, the Monster Raving Loonies spread a little sparkle dust on the musty world of politics.

At the time, people moaned that Sutch and co. undermined the political process, but statistics show that voter turnout was higher back in the Loonies' heyday of the 70s, 80s and 90s, so it might be that their eye-catching antics attracted the apathetic into the voting booth. Sutch's funniest tactic was to position his grinning mug right next to the likely winner when the TV cameras rolled to record the announcement of the result. He'd often be the first to shake the winner's hand, instantly deflating the ego-balloon.

That set the pattern and the good Lord inspired hundreds of imitators, my own favourite being Lord Buckethead, who appeared on the podium with his head in a bucket, albeit one decorated in felt-tip pen with a smiley face. Guess that sort of thing is beyond the pale these days.

Balls of Fury Competition

Balls of Fury CompetitionWatch the balls fly in this hilarious, action-packed comedy starring Christopher Walken (Hairspray), George Lopez (The George Lopez Show) and hot, new comedy talent Dan Fogler (Good Luck Chuck) as you enter the unsanctioned, underground, and unhinged world of extreme Ping-Pong!

The competition is brutal and the stakes are deadly. Dan Fogler stars as the down-and-out former professional Ping-Pong child prodigy and Def Leppard-devotee Randy Daytona. He left the world of professional ping-pong in disgrace after his defeat at the hands of a hissy East German Karl Wolfschtagg (Thomas Lennon) during the 1988 Olympics. His father's death on the same day left Randy's life is a shambles until he gets recruited by FBI Agent Rodriguez (Barry Lopez) for a secret mission.

The FBI want Randy to infiltrate an 'ENTER THE DRAGON'-style Ping-Pong tournament (to the death!), run by an evil triad leader and one of the FBI's Most Wanted, arch-fiend Feng (Christopher Walken). Laughter ensues as after two decades out of the game getting back into shape for Randy is one hell of a mission!!
