Diary

Jesus Makes Easter Comeback

He Is Risen. Over the coming days, you'll see those three words on church notice-boards and on bits of A4 stuck on people's windows and probably by text these days, too.

Luckily for Jesus, his rise from the dead will be noticed more this year than for a long time thanks to a holy trinity of factors that could almost be described as god-given.

Factor One is the funny 2008 calendar under which Easter weekend has been set free from the school holidays. With so many people taking breaks with their kids, bothering with Easter had become an afterthought. This year, JC's lost flock is at home.

Second, we have the decline in importance of Easter eggs. These were the main heathen weapons against an overly-Christian take on early Spring festivities, but nowadays there are so many of the things at such a cheap price available over such a long period that, well, who cares? you might as well have a normal bar of chocolate and there's no daft mug to find space in the cupboard for.

Next, the weather-gods have decreed rain for the weekend, which should put a block on happy family plans for day-trips out of town.

It's true that there's quite a bit of football on TV over the weekend but, other than that, there is nothing to do*; we are at the mercy of the priests and their call to prayer. The good news is that Easter Sunday marks the end of Lent, so you can go on a right old bender on Monday, feel righteous about it and sink into your pit a better person. He rises, you fall.

* This is simply not true, as evidenced by our excellent Easter feature here
