Diary

Sanctity of the Circus

There is a lofty majesty at the very heart of an English courtroom; a compelling mix of oak panelling, horse hair and fine ermine. For all the tradition-fuelled authority this inspires though, there is thankfully always the chance that the pomposity will be pricked and comic farce will prevail.

Earlier this week a certain Egyptian shopkeeper did just that at The Royal Courts of Justice.

In a thundering display, Harrods boss Mohamed Al Fayed combined Mel Gibson with Michael Moore and firmly rounded on the British Establishment. He accused Prince Philip of coordinating a plot to kill Diana, Princess of Wales and his son Dodi. While not being able to produce any evidence to support this claim - the conspirators had removed this in a clumsy trail of cover-up he suggests - he did provide a colourful raison d'etre for the Royal Family's monstrous actions; they are in fact a family of monsters.

Not just any old monsters you understand but a genetic mutation of fact and fiction's most feared and evil ogres. From history we have Nazism (Prince Philip), from literature Frankenstein (Philip again), from nature the crocodile (Camilla) and for a hearty mix of all three we have Dracula (the whole batty family).

This is excellent stuff of course. We may have expected Al Fayed's crack legal team, led by anti-establishment stalwart Mike Mansfield Q.C., to reveal some killer evidence, such as the high-intensity flash light, the white Fiat Uno or even a pregnancy test kit. But when your foes are history's most evil then such tangibles become mere time-wasters compared to a thorough knowledge of Hammer House of Horror's back catalogue.

Not all see it this way. Frumpy parliamentarians are calling for an end to the case. Lord Foulkes of Cumnock, a member of the Intelligence and Security Committee, said: "I think it's a total waste of time and money. The extraordinary performance of Al Fayed has turned the whole thing into a circus."

I beg to differ, m'Lud. Democracies are not just built upon free and fair elections, they are built upon systems that separate powers and check those powers. Ask yourself this; in how many countries in the world could you lambaste the great and the good in such terms in the certain knowledge that you will exit the court as a free man?

In his own way then, Al Fayed has confirmed the sanctity of the circus. Bravo.

As You Like It Competition

As You Like It CompetitionWith a setting inspired by 19th Century Japan, Kenneth Branagh adapts Shakespeare's lightest and most delightful comedy As You Like It, a celebration of the enduring power of love in all its many guises. Witty, playful and utterly magical, the story is a compelling romantic adventure in which Rosalind and Orlando's famous courtship is played out against a backdrop of political rivalry, banishment and exile in the Forest of Arden. As You Like It, is available to own on DVD from 25th February 2008.

Rosalind (Golden Globe®-nominee Bryce Dallas Howard), is the victim of circumstance as the unfortunate daughter of a banished Duke (Brian Blessed). With her family's reputation in tatters she is forced to flee her uncle's royal court and seeks a hidden refuge in the wild Forest of Arden. Accompanied by her loyal cousin Celia (Romola Garai), Rosalind bravely embraces this new, foreign world and disguises herself as a man to avoid detection.
