Diary

Pimps' Limp Future

Pimps have seen their social status rise in extraordinary fashion in recent times.

One of London's coolest hairdressers is called Pimps and Pinups, there was a bestseller in the book charts called Pimpology: The 48 laws of the Game which doled out business advice from a player's point of view and everyone has heard of the MTV show Pimp My Ride.

The question now is: can the hard-won glamourous image of pimps survive the revelation that Princess Diana's driver-to-death Henri Paul was a bit of a pimp on the side.

To be fair to Paul, it seems he was successful in his chosen second profession as he had about UKP170,000 stashed away in 15 bank accounts. He earned only UKP21,000 a year in his first job as a security guard at the Paris Ritz.

But when they come to make the definitive film of Diana's death, my guess is Paul will be portrayed as a drunken sleazebag, a lonely depressive hooked on Prozac. General pimp culture won't escape the fall-out as the Mercedes crashed by Paul was at least as pimped up as anything driven Gangsta pimps. They'll have to slough off all their bling and get back to skulking in the shadows and bruising women where the punters won't notice.
