Diary

Hold on to the Hold

Next time you're bored on a plane think about what's going on under your feet.

When I was wobbly about flying I could never get the thought out of my head that a thin sheet of metal was all that separated me from the wild blue yonder. In the end what helped was to remember that between feet and sky there was loads of luggage on which to float should the worst happen.

Not anymore. In one of its cost-saving wheezes, Ryannair has announced it aims to cut the amount of baggage in the hold by 50 per cent. How will I know my seat won't be above the empty bit? It's not like I can quiz the check-in people because in a sneaky pincer movement, Ryannair is out to discourage airport check-ins by imposing a UKP3 fine on non-internet check-ins. Check mate.

Never fear. When there's a gap in the market, or in the hold, it gets filled pretty soon. In Sweden, there has been a spate of thefts by either kids or little people - they're not sure which - who hide in cases then sneak out during the journey and rifle through rival passengers' gear taking all the good stuff.

Next week: hand-baggage closets, macaque monkeys and what goes on above your head
