Diary

Bob Braves Scotland

The big idea in I'm Not There is that Bob Dylan isn't one man, but a series of unconnected characters. Now, to the list of cowboy, family guy, folk hero and folk traitor we can add Scottish Laird.

Bob has apparently spent much of the last year readying Aultmore House in Inverness for habitation and all he really wants to do is spend New Year's behind his gates of Eden. Who knows which way it will go for Bob up there? Maybe he'll meet a girl from the north country, or suffer the north country blues? The answer, my friend,... okay enough of the song title puns.

Back in real life, locals are wary of the consequences. "There is a fear that a stream of fans will pour into the remote area for New Year following their guru," read one report.

Frightening as the prospect of ageing nerdy hippies rampaging through the heather sounds, the rest of us have even greater cause to fear: what will happen to the great man's music. Let's face it, the last time a 60s legend played house in rural Scotland, we got Mull of Kintyre and the Frog Chorus.

Silent Light Competition

Silent Light CompetitionCarlos Reygadas's latest film Silent Light is a mesmerising and deeply moving tale of love and betrayal played out against the pastoral backdrop of the North Mexican Mennonite community.

The story centres around Johan, a married man who against the laws of his faith and traditional beliefs, falls in love with another woman, thus facing the dilemma of whether to betray his wife and disrupt the apparent stability of the community or sacrifice his true love and future happiness. Sublimely shot, entirely on location in the Mexican Mennonite community near Chihuahua, SILENT LIGHT opens with what is arguably the single most remarkable shot of the year; dawn breaking over the rural landscape.

To celebrate the release of Silent Light on December 7, Tartan Films is giving away a copy of Battle in Heaven on DVD (a film by the same director as Silent Light) and a Silent Light Film poster to two lucky winners.
