The Skater

There's an old film called The Swimmer* in which Burt Lancaster travels around his upmarket neighbourhood by way of swimming pools. Something similar can now be done with all the outdoor ice-skating venues that these days turn up in London over the festive period.

For a Christmastime day out to beat all others, I see a west to east route, starting off with the rink at Hampton Court, gliding down river to Kew Gardens, making a slight detour up to Hampstead Heath, before zipping south for a central London hat-trick comprising Hyde Park, the Natural History Museum and Somerset House. Then it's a slide east for a taste of the past at the Tower of London and a glimpse of the future at Canary Wharf.

In the film, along the way Lancaster's character gets off with the beautiful teenage daughter of one of his friends - standard practice for mid-life crisis movies - an episode I feel duty bound to make only optional for the London skating version. Political Correctness gone mad I know.

But fret not love fans; what we lose on the journey, we gain at the destination. The nasty film-makers cast poor Burt into a mental breakdown when he reaches a sumptuous swimming pool party full of the ghosts of his sexual past. None of that sordid stuff for us London skaters, as our grand finale is to chat up and bump into whoever we fancy down at the Ice Disco at the 02. Even if it turns sordid, keep telling yourself that everything on ice smells clean.

* The Swimmer (1968). Directed by Frank Perry, from a short story by John Cheever.

New Year's Eve

Every New Year's Eve sees millions of Londoners flood the clubs and pubs to watch the timer tick away. It's an important night: the final party and death knell of 2007 combined with the birth/first hangover of 2008. And, of course, only once a year can partygoers seek out that much-talked-about New Year's kiss, whether it's on a balcony overlooking the Thames or in a pantry in Shoreditch. As always, Londonnet has already got it figured out, so all you have to do is decide where to spend your hard-earned quid to round out the year... Read More
