Tread Carefully in Hotel Trysts

Someone big in London hotels told an anecdote the other day in which a very fat woman broke the bed. She did her best to fix it and left for the day, but by the time cleaners arrived, it had fallen down again.

Aiming both to spare his guest her blushes and himself another repair bill, the hotel manager placed a packet of condoms on the coverlet of the good-as-new bed, a thoughtful way of saying, "Be careful tonight, sweetheart!"

At the other end of the discreet-staff scale, this week some poor bloke in Scotland was handed a three-year probationary sentence and added to the sex offenders' register after cleaners walked in on him riding his partner in their locked hotel room.

It is true that the man's love-interest was his faithful two-wheeler - "The accused was holding the bike and moving his hips back and forth as if to simulate sex" - but there is no indication there was anything serious like pedalophilia involved and if a bit of accidental metal fatigue is a problem, next time the man should book into the hotel of the first anecdote and he'd probably find on his bed a bike repair kit complete with oils, pumps and spare rubber.

The Importance of Being Earnest Competition

The Importance of Being Earnest CompetitionThe Importance of Being Earnest is one of the most popular plays ever written. Subtitled 'A trivial comedy for serious people', it is bursting with hilarious lines and extraordinary twists of fate and sparkles with the witty dialogue of its genteel protagonists.

Prim-and-proper Jack Worthington is in love with the equally prim-and-proper Gwendolyn Fairfax. His friend, Algernon Moncrieff, is in love with Cecily Cardew. But both Gwendolyn and Cecily are in love with Ernest. Add the magnificently imposing Lady Bracknell, a nanny with a dubious story about a handbag and the result is a delightful entertainment as fresh and funny as when it was first performed in 1895.

Penelope Keith, one of Britain's best-loved actresses, was born to play Lady Bracknell. Her many previous theatre appearances include Time and the Conways, Blithe Spirit, Entertaining Angels and Relatively Speaking. Her numerous television series include the hugely successful The Good Life and To the Manor Born.
