Counting the Last Peas in the New
Piccadilly
The New Piccadilly, on Denman
Street, Soho, is one of the last genuine 1950s cafe-restaurants left
in London. It's famous for serving between-rehearsals actors, for
its adherence to its original ethos and, well, just for still being
there. Next month it serves its last fry up and its last milky
coffee.
Lorenzo Marioni, the man who has run the joint for
years, puts a brave face on the closure, saying the re-development
of the cafe's site will be good for the area.
He might be
right. London has plenty enough dopey heritage without adding a
layer of 50s retro-chic on top of all the Victoriana and
Mock-Tudor.
Still, it's not just the time-warp peculiarity of
the cafe's design that's at stake, nor really, if I'm honest, that
there'll be another chain store in its place; it's the way New
Piccadilly has lodged itself in the old memory banks.
Whole
eras of my life can be marked out by various lazy meetings and other
missed opportunities in the New Piccadilly. Marked out in peas, in
fact, as I used to judge people on how many peas they left on the
plate. I had a phobia about fussy eaters, so the more on the plate
the less I approved. Beans worked almost as well. They don't do peas
or beans in Starbucks and counting the pomegranate pips probably
won't be as fair-minded.
