From Balham to Paris on a
Star
It's quite a jump to the Millennium
Dome, now called the O2 Arena, from The Bedford pub in Balham but
that's the leap to be made by singer Rietta Austin, who said she was
“unbelievably excited” to be chosen as the first performer to sing
at the revamped venue.
Okay, she's part of a trial run for
the O2 Arena, before mega-acts like Prince turn up, but there will
still be 12,000 people in the audience and there's no doubt, for
anyone who's seen her sing, that she'll do a good job.
My
theory is that Austin's effort is the latest evidence that the game
is up for old-style stars. Think about all those talent shows on TV.
In the most recent one, Britain's Got Talent, even a couple of kids
hit the notes with real passion. Then there's all the hilarious
homemade clips on YouTube, which are funnier and more innovative
than most comedies on TV.
In short, you've got to feel sorry
for the stars. Their monopoly has been broken. That's why they've
started to go all mental on us and why every second celebrity is in
rehab or why Paris Hilton has found God in prison. Really she didn't
need to look skywards - all she had to do was do a turn at The
Bedford and stay awhile. Her offspring could then be called Balham
Hilton, which would inoculate her from any future stardom
trouble.
