Curse Of The Golden Flower (15)
"Gold and jade on the outside, rot and decay on the inside," or so goes an old Chinese saying. Nothing could more accurately summarise the twisted lives of the imperial family in power during the Later Tang dynasty, one of the most ostentatious periods in the country's history...

A Little Look at Bricks and Mortar
Things seem to cost a lot, dont they? Proper, big things, not your 79p for a song on iTunes type things, or black plastic holder-things that play DVDs, or TVs, or cheap eats… okay, there are quite a few things that are quite cheap when you think about it.
I mean rock solid things like solid rock. Last week they announced plans to fill the dry moat around the Tower of London with water. Great! Except for the fact it's going to cost UKP15 million. Assuming water doesn't break the bank, the cost seems all to be in the stuff they line the moat with. Or look at the new Wembley. Nearly UKP1 billion. The seats, being plastic, can't cost much, as I proved with the DVD player example, so nearly all that cash is presumably for the building materials.
Closer to earth, how about that constant moan: house prices? Pretty soon you won't be able to buy anywhere to live in London for less than UKP100,000. Never mind being born with a silver spoon in your mouth, these days you want to be born in a quarry.
But wait! A quick Google reveals that the price of bricks has remained fairly static for a decade. You can get a thousand of the things for around UKP20, apparently. Instead, it must be the land itself that is shooting up in price. The more of it you own, the more you'll be further and further ahead of the pack and you can then pass it on to your brood. In time we'll have created a new landed gentry, just like the good old days, and they can spend all their time outbidding everyone else on eBay.
