Taxes Can Be Fun
Now the cold weather has turned up, the whole global warming thing might go away for a while, but around the corner lie a load of new taxes thanks to the government and Richmond council.
As out-riders for the government's schemes, Richmond plan to introduce a green car-tax regime under which bigger-engined beasts will face higher charges. Although most large cars will take the hit, the green-lobby has been clever in focussing attention on 4x4s and it's fair to say that 4x4s aren’t the most popular of the planet's animals.
Whatever you think of 4x4s or global warming, it has to be said this idea of taxing things that most people can't stand is the future.
Instead of slapping taxes on good and services that are popular, like beer and gambling, the government should hammer deeply unpopular stuff like hair in the sink, spiders or regional news programmes.
As usual, Ken Livingstone is ahead of the game. Commenting on future tax targets, the London Mayor said: "We could take the plastic bag tax from Ireland and the packaging laws from Germany."
That's the spirit! Who likes plastic bags? No-one. They split, they squeak and they clog up the only spare drawer in the kitchen. Paper bags are much better because they can help you look like cool American film-stars. I must admit I know little of this mysterious German packaging, but, by Jiminy, it sounds evil.
