Thirty years ago, Jack wagered his soul, in a Faustian pact, in exchange for possession of the good ship Black Pearl. Now the agreed three decades have passed and Davey intends to collect what is rightfully his. Unable, or rather unwilling to pay, Jack faces the terrifying prospect of an afterlife of eternal servitude, which the conniving captain would rather avoid. 7/7 Anniversary Angst

We are about to hit the anniversary of the London Bombings, an event to be marked with a nationwide two-minute silence at noon on Friday, a succession of ceremonies involving major government figures, the unveiling of plaques in honour of the fallen and hours of rolling TV news coverage.

I doubt there are many people who wouldn’t think it right to remember in some way the 52 people who died on 7/7/05 and probably most would value the silence as a traditional and quietly effective way to do so.

But, what of the rest of it? Do we really need a grim-faced queue of ministers to lead us in a renewal of national grief? Should the news channels devote half their day’s output to showing how much their reporters and presenters care? Even Fox News are over here for the event.

No, is my answer. To me, it all smacks too much of allowing ourselves to be brow-beaten by the bombers into a state of permanent anxiety, something we all swore we wouldn’t let happen. Far better, I think, to concentrate on celebrating that other anniversary, of London winning the race to host the 2012 Olympics, especially with England out of the World Cup and no British player left at Wimbledon.

Dear LondonNet,
Wrong info - Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest was not on at Wandsworth Cineworld when I called there yesterday [05.07.06].  Annoying to go to see a particular film and it's not on.
- Sheila

Dear Sheila,
Thanks for the feedback.
The listing for Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest under the Wandsworth Cineworld page specifies that the movie was only showing from Thursday (today).
But you are right, this could be clearer. We are looking into it and will try to improve it.
