Pond Life Threat to Society

London, one of the jewels of human civilisation, is going wild.

We’ve had occasion in the past to log the rising feral populations of various exotic and dangerous animals from parakeets, eagles and crows, to rats, panthers and reality TV contestants. Now we can add amphibians to the growing list of London’s zoological treats.

The terrapin population is reckoned to be about to explode, according to the experts, who have recently warned that one warm summer would do the trick.

Already, duck-kind is wise to the turtle-terror, having seen some of its younger members on Mill Hill pond mercilessly dragged underwater and gobbled up by teams of crack terrapins. The fear is that such isolated incidents could become the norm if global warming fulfils its balmy promise. Then, it’s not only ducks that’ll need to be on their guard, but parents of bread-wielding toddlers. One slip and snap! off fly a few infant fingers.

There’s a lot of talk at the moment about a break down of respect in society and the emergence of a generation of feral children, illustrated this week by the award at the Chelsea Flower Show of a prize to Kim ‘Born to be’ Wilde. The solution is obvious – organise a gladiator style fight-to-the-death of wild kids versus wild animals, an event which would also undoubtedly secure London the Olympics.

To people of a certain generation and outlook, roughly those served by Meltdown, Billy Bragg is a straight-up hero. Back in the 80s he managed to revive protest-folk almost single-handed and had the political commitment to back it up. Songs like A New England, Milkman of Human Kindness and Between the Wars flew the red flag with a wit and beauty not usually associated with the radical left. More recently, Bragg teamed up with Wilco to put music to some of Woody Guthrie’s lyrics, to great acclaim. The New England may have been lost, but Bragg has found himself still hugely respected as a musical innovator and performer.

Dear LondonNet,
Greetings. Your site has been extremely helpful in planning our holiday to England. We are most curious about dressing for comfortable touring without looking like Yanks. We will be there in mid June and would appreciate any advice regarding the appropriate attire to pack for touring during the day and pubbing at night. Thank you!
- A Tori Rogers

Dear Tori,
Bum bags. Lots of them. Only kidding. June is supposed to be extremely hot, especially on the tube, so I suggest layering your wardrobe. A nice jean skirt with a tank and some good walking sandals (like Tevas or Chacos) will be best, although any good/semi-smart walking shoes will do (make sure you break them in BEFORE you go). If you plan to go clubbing, do not wear trainers. I repeat: DO NOT WEAR TRAINERS. Your best bet is a nice jean/linen skirt, a t-shirt or tank, and a light jacket or cardigan. Pop in some fun earings and put on some lipstick for a night at a club, and you're set (I will note that Londoners are crazy about their heels. They have special feet-powers that allow them to walk in heels for blocks upon blocks. I don't recommend this for the faint-hearted). If you're travelling with a dude, I suggest he wear some khaki or linen trousers and a white-T, with similar sandals. There you have it. Fashion advice from LondonNet. Hope that helps.
