LONDON ELECTS:
- London goes to the polls on Thursday, 10 June 2004

London-wide elections take place next week for the Mayor of London, London Assembly and European Parliament.

Incumbent mayor Ken Livingstone faces a strong challenge from Conservative candidate Steve Norris and Liberal candidate Simon Hughes. Livingstone stood as an independent in the first mayoral elections in 2004, a move which led to his expulsion from the Labour Party. He is now back in the Labour fold, although some think his vote will suffer from this link. Livingstone promises more of the same for the next term and plans a widening of the congestion charge zone in central London. Simon Hughes says he would keep the charge largely unchanged, while Norris says he would scrap it immediately.

Voters in the mayoral elections get to cast a first and a second preference, an anomoly which could aid centre candidate Simon Hughes. He'll only be able to pick up these extra votes though if he makes it through to the second round. Tory challenger Norris is thought to have the better chance of making it into the last two alongside poll leader Livingstone where he could pick up transfer votes from the anti-EU UKIP and far right BNP.

2. LONDON DIARY
- Free Bird

----------------------------------------

Parrots turned up outside 10 Downing Street this week to protest against the
cruel manner in which their kind is transported from the jungle.

Even the small percentage that survive the trip end up in cages and are
cajoled into trotting out funny phrases for the occasional amusement of
their owners.

But over the years some parakeets have broken free from their pampered
prisons to live among like-minded members of their species in places like
Norwood. Norwood might not be everyone’s idea of a bolt-hole, but, unlike
the fantasy Sanctuary that Jenny Agutter and Michael York look for in Logan’
s Run, we can be sure it does exist.

Estimates put the London population of wild parakeets at around 6,000.
Meanwhile, the authorities have been trying to get shot of the pigeons of
Trafalgar Square. I like the pigeons but a lot of people see them as
rats-on-wings, so how about a compromise: replace the pigeons with
parakeets? Parakeets like trees, so they’d have to plant some on the square.
There’s space on the empty plinth for a start.

In these days of rumbling discontent over immigration and war, what could be
a better and more beautiful symbol of an open and international city?
Mayoral candidates are free to borrow this idea. Cheep cheep.
