2. LONDON DIARY
- Summer Dreams
----------------------------------------

This being Britain, you can't rely on the weather, so what do we think it is
that marks the beginning of summer, England style?

Today, Thursday, England began their first home Test Match of the season,
which is one marker I like to use. That the game is played at Lord's, a real
bastion of stiff-upper lips, makes it even more apt.

The trouble is, a lot of unfortunate people have little time for cricket so
something else is needed. London's lidos open for business this month and
they're great places but other countries do them better, I'm afraid.

Ice-creams, short-skirts, shorts, and sales of anti-perspirant are all signs
of new season but again, they're all pretty much international in flavour.

Yesterday evening in a pub beside a south London common I came across the
answer: the woman next to me at the bar ordered a round of shandies. Shandy!
It's a drink I always forget about from October to May then rediscover with
glee for the summer months and what a drink it is. The addition of lemonade
to beer, strictly at 50/50 proportions, makes for a drink that slakes the
thirst like no other and because the alcohol is diluted, you can drink a lot
more of it. Hooray.

For a real treat, I suggest a Shandy Float in which a lump of vanilla
ice-cream is added. Ideally this concoction would be quaffed at Lord's on
the evening of the fifth and final day of an England-winning Test Match.
Dreams can come true. (David Clee)
